The Folds of Inner Peace and Realization

Much before Art had a market it had a different space for itself. It still does but sometimes this space is not immediately seen or it is viewed only for a specific purpose. That space is the space of self-growth and healing. It does not mean that one should suffer from a bi-polar disorder, chronic arthritis or even post-traumatic stress in order to experience the healing effects of Art. No, every individual needs a healing effect – be it of love, of laughter or just for the effort of going through one’s daily routine.

Art is often been said to be a form of expression. In his book, “Creative Healing” Michael Samuels says, “Physicians and nurses are discovering that art, music, dance and poetry can all have profound healing effects on their patients. Art brings to the human spirit a sense of freedom and joy. The spirit freed helps the body heal. Replacing fear with hope and darkness with light is the essence of modern body-mind-spirit medicine.”

By expressing yourself through Art you are able to understand things about yourself that you did not earlier comprehend or want to know. It is the start of a journey of self-discovery. One is no longer afraid to be only in one’s own company – because sometimes the biggest thing we can fear is our own selves. Art helps to remove that fear. In fact it can be so powerful that it may altogether dissolve all negative emotion and thought and instead replace them with layers of brilliance.

This is why a person can go out and buy a painting, put it up on the wall and still be happy despite the fact that the house may be devoid of anything else. Art does not just give joy to the creator but also to the one who sees – if he truly sees.

It is said that art prepares an individual for the “real world”. It activates the creative side of the brain – the side that is non-verbal, intuitive and imaginative. However, it also brings with it linear and logical thought. So it helps the brain shift into different thought modes, helping the individual to think differently and to approach old problems in new ways. It enhances the cognitive capabilities and opens doors to an enjoyment that was earlier not known.

Art brings with it confidence. That something can be created. That it can be beautiful. That it can give joy. It helps lift people out of depression and instills in them a sense of self-worth. Because when one is creating, there is an in pouring of love and then nothing in the world can be bad. You become pure and untouched, simple and child-like.
