Art in the ordinary Pencil

For most of us a 'Pencil' is not more than a writing instrument, but you will be surprised to know that artists create some of the most beautiful artworks using the pencil as a medium. Art from the ordinary explores some fabulous works of art made out of pencils that are unbelievably surprising.

Sculptures and jewellery by Jennifer Maestre:the artist is a master creator of sculptures and jewellery using pencils. To make the pencil sculptures, she takes hundreds of pencils, cuts them into 1-inch sections, drills a hole in each section, sharpens them all and sews them together.

Felissimo's 500 Colored Pencil Set For Social Designer is a complete set of 500 colored pencils consisting of 20 units. The designer leaves the sculpture to one’s imagination and creative skill, they can be stretched out, rolled up or then displayed as pencils.

This Pencil Bench is an award winning design by Boex 3D Creative Solutions, the seat is made up of 1600 pencils which can be removed & used. While this makes for beautiful art, the use of an ordinary object like pencils makes this unbelievably unique.

72 Pencils by George W. Hart, is a geometric construction of 72 pencils, assembled into a work of art. Though these works are restricted to a signed limited edition of twenty-five, each piece shares a common form and  yet each is unique.

Pencil Furniture: These pencil sculptures were made exclusively for faber-castell, using thousands of sharpened 'castell 9000' pencils by German artist Kerstin Schulz.

Using the pencil as a canvas makes these works even more unique. They have been created by an Australian artist, who uses a set of pencils as the base to draw upon.  The artist is a self-taught illustrator, who moved from the area of stencil art to exhibit his illustration work worldwide.

Perhaps there is no limit to the creative instinct of man; this ability to root the ordinary into uniqueness makes the journey of discovering art in the ordinary all the more invigorating.
